Dr. Mike Carper

I am a passionate, experienced, and tenacious teacher committed to guiding others in discovering truth together. My teaching centers on helping students actively connect thought, action, feeling, and spiritual life, encouraging them to see how their thinking unites these areas. Inspired by my dissertation on suffering and evil, I specialize in teaching Philosophy, Ethics, Logic, Critical Thinking, Writing, Literature, Religion, and History. My academic background includes a PhD in Philosophy from St Louis University (High Distinction); master’s degrees in Philosophy and Theology (Boston University) and English (University of Nebraska); and bachelor’s degrees in English, Philosophy, History, and Biology. I have spent twenty-five years teaching Philosophy, Ethics, Logic, Critical Thinking, English Composition and Writing, Religion, Literature, and History.
Though I have lived on both coasts (Los Angeles and Boston), I was born in Topeka, Kansas, and raised in Kansas City and Western Nebraska. I also lived in the Twin Cities for a brief period. My passions outside of work include: almost any outdoor activity, rock climbing and hiking, visiting art museums and galleries, reading, ballroom dancing (especially Tango!), and further developing my expertise in judging fine wine and artisanal beers!
